  ABOUT SF CANADA

About SF Canada

SF Canada exists to foster a sense of community among Canadian writers of speculative fiction, to improve communication between Canadian writers of speculative fiction, to foster the growth of quality writing in Canadian speculative fiction, to lobby on behalf of Canadian writers of speculative fiction, and to encourage the translation of Canadian speculative fiction. SF Canada supports  positive social action.

SF Canada aims to provide a structure for socializing and maintaining links among members throughout Canada, from coast to coast to coast, in both official languages, and to promote the publishing and sale of works created, edited, and published by its members.

SF Canada's principal newsletter, Communiqué, provides a bilingual forum for the views of its members and to share news about the speculative fiction field, including market news, publishing news, and other items of interest. It is free for all members, but non-members may subscribe to receive it, at a rate of $25.00 a year. A second newsletter, Top Secret, usually appears along with Communiqué and provides a regular updating of the members' directory. It is reserved to members only, and may feature discussions about confidential topics. SF Canada also supports an Internet listserver for its  members, and. uses this World Wide Web site to publicize and promote its members and their works.

SF Canada distributes nomination and voting ballots for the Aurora Awards to its members, and pays the Aurora voting fee; it subsidizes the distribution of copies of Aurora-eligible stories by members to the general membership; SF Canada membership also earns various discounts in Canadian SF bookstores. The annual general meeting of SF Canada rotates between Eastern and Western sites.

To qualify for SF Canada membership, one must have published professionally at least two short stories or one book. Other Canadians with a substantial professional interest in SF (specialized editors, academics, librarians) will be considered for membership on a case by case basis. A one-year membership is worth $25.00; the fixed renewal date is on July 1st, but members who join in the middle of the year get a rebate on their renewal, pro-rated on a quarterly basis. Two members living at the same postal address qualify for a common $35.00 rate; only one copy of each newsletter will be sent to their address, but both will be full-status members. An applicant living at the same address as a member can take advantage of the common household rate by paying a membership fee of $10.00.
